This chapter discusses events that occurred between October and December 1941, which culminated on December 7 when Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and prompted the outbreak of war between the United States and Japan. It covers the plan that was being worked out in Washington and Manila for the defense of the Philippines in the weeks before the attack; the military situation in Manila in the months leading up to the outbreak of war; the attack on Pearl Harbor; the attack on Clark Field Air Base; Washington's modification of the military strategy due to the defeats in Hawaii and Manila; the Japanese military landing operation in the Philippines; and the evacuation from Manila to Corregidor.
