This chapter examines William Sellers's postwar ownership of Midvale Steel Co. and how it shaped new corporate patterns of industry and economic development, including the rise of the military–industrial complex and national capitalism. It considers the metallurgical research and management reform at Midvale that gave rise to the new science of management and furthered William Sellers's rationalization mission while allowing him to extend his influence over national economic policy and in international manufacturing. It discusses the ways that Midvale helped fashion the technologies, markets, and metropolitan environments of the second industrial revolution as well as the role of industrialists in producing new forms of corporate capitalism that in turn led to a new national and international capitalism.

Keywords:   economic development, William Sellers, Midvale Steel Co, military–industrial complex, capitalism, metallurgical research, management reform, economic policy, manufacturing, second industrial revolution
