This introductory chapter provides a brief background of the wine industry in eastern North America. Throughout the years, the East has had to depend on its own resources to build its wine industry. It was not until after World War II that modern sprays and methods of applying them made commercial growing of grapes for wine possible. In the 1940s and 1950s, a small number of dedicated grape growers, winemakers, and researchers in New York, Ohio, Maryland, and Ontario provided the inspiration that enabled the East to make quality table wines. As the result of their experiments in growing grapes in the difficult environments of the East—including subzero cold, diseases, and insect pests—interest spread to other states.
