This chapter details the early years of the wine industry in eastern North America. Environmental factors such as climate, diseases, and pests were the primary concern for those who wanted to grow grapes in those years. Winemakers also had to cope with manmade laws and regulations, and those interested in opening wineries often faced government restrictions that ranged from zoning ordinances to licensing. Eventually, as states became more accustomed to having small wineries within their borders and seeing the economic benefits in terms of tourist dollars and taxes from sales, attitudes changed markedly and legislatures and state agencies became much more amenable to helping their industries grow.
