Chapter 2 situates Chile historically and lays out the importance of institutional context in Walmart’s global expansion. Walmart has not effectively been able to replicate its model wholesale across countries and continents. It has had to adapt to culture, politics, and regulatory climate. The chapter explores the history and contemporary nature of the Chilean labor movement and labor code and explains their role in Walmart’s particular model in Chile today. As in many of Walmart’s global operations, Walmart operates four different store types and under different names. I draw comparisons to Walmart in the United States and Walmart’s other global operations.
