This chapter explains how globalization and Middle Eastern oil have combined to contribute to terrorism. Oil-related funds helped create both Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, which housed and supported Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. Oil money was critical not only to the indoctrination and training of the Afghan resistance against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan but also to its ability to survive and to develop in Afghanistan under Taliban control. Globalization can also be said to have helped launch Al-Qaeda as a transnational organization, despite some of the primeval trappings of that organization. It allowed the Afghan Arabs who would form the backbone of Al-Qaeda to transform more effectively into Al-Qaeda around the world and to emerge as a transnational force.
