Energy Budget
Energy Budget
This chapter provides an overview of the beaver's energy budget. More specifically, it considers the amount of energy required by the beaver's proverbial and incessant activity and how the animal meets these energy requirements. In addition to bark, beavers eat much herbaceous and aquatic vegetation during the growing season. It is nearly impossible to measure how much of these they take; therefore, most calculations of food intake have been confined to woody plants. This chapter also examines the beaver's energy needs, energy storage, metabolic rate and ambient temperatures, metabolism in water, and swimming speed. It also presents some benchmarks related to the energy budget of beavers.
