This chapter recounts the story of Anne Michelet, a dame entretenue. When she was fourteen years old, Anne Michelet traveled to Paris to find work, sharing a chambre garnie (furnished room) with a friend with whom she worked in linen production or maintenance. At age nineteen, she became the kept woman of a Flemish marquis. Anne's path to prostitution can be traced back to her relationship with a twenty-six-year- old soldier in the Black Musketeers. In relation to her story, inspectors believe that loss of sexual honor led many women to step away from the path toward marriage and become part of the demimonde.
