This chapter provides an overview of the social practices of mistress keeping, which were defined by broad parameters. Most patrons visited their mistresses several times a week, though a sizeable minority visited more often, sometimes every day or even several times a day. Relationships in which a patron visited either more than once a day or less than several times a week rarely endured long. Regardless of how often they saw each other, the couple spent most of their time in the mistress's apartment and if they could afford it, in a petite maison. Most men shared meals with their mistresses during their visits, and just as in brothels, eating together was an important prelude to sexual activity.
