(p.22) Chapter 2 Historical Preludes to the 1999–2000 Conflict
Violence and Vengeance

Christopher R. Duncan

Cornell University Press

This chapter contextualizes the conflict in North Maluku within the larger events in Indonesian and North Moluccan history that laid the groundwork for the beliefs and ideas surrounding the violence and the course that it took. It begins with a brief examination of the history of Islam and Christianity in the region and explores the legacies of the Dutch colonial missionary effort. It then looks at the growth of reform Islam during the New Order and how these developments affected various populations in North Maluku. Religion was not the only contentious issue in the region and the chapter ends with an exploration of the history of development in North Maluku in the latter half of the twentieth century and the changing nature of local politics as the New Order came to an end.

Keywords:   North Maluku, religious violence, communal conflict, Islam, Christianity, New Order, North Moluccan history
