The introduction introduces the main concepts – economic adversity, economic shock, chronic economic distress, and economic resilience and examines previous efforts to define these. It then presents a review of what we know about economic adversity and regional economic resilience from existing literature. Finally it sets forth our research strategy, methods and structure of the book, and presents a summary of each chapter.
