This chapter looks at the early vineyards and wineries in eastern North America. In the 1950s and 1960s, vineyard plantings and winery openings occurred at a slow pace. It was during these years that the influence of Philip Wagner and Konstantin Frank led to an increasing awareness of the possibilities the French hybrids and vinifera offered in making dry table wines. Smaller wineries in most states did not open until after the passage of favorable legislation, usually in the form of farm winery laws. In a few states where there was no problem with the law, or where those who were interested in opening wineries chose to comply with existing laws—often at added expense—wineries opened at an earlier date.
