This chapter examines grape growing and wine making in eastern North America in the 1970s. Long before there was any real knowledge of the importance of site selection, people planted grapes on the land they had available. If they were unlucky enough to plant in frost pockets, they had immediate and continuing problems; but if they were fortunate and planted in a favorable microclimate, they had a jump-start on success. The choice of grapes to grow was more often than not based on the kind of wine the individual grower liked to drink, because there were no recommendations on the varieties of grapes for a particular climate or site. As a larger number of people began growing grapes, assistance became increasingly available from various sources. Also, societies and other organizations started to provide more information on growing grapes and making wine in a new wine region.
