This concluding chapter focuses on the wine industry in the twenty-first century. The top news story of the first decade of the twenty-first century would have to be the explosion in the number of wineries in eastern North America. In 2000, there were approximately 900 wineries in the eastern United States and Canada, and by the end of the decade, that number had tripled. Three major trends have helped the industry evolve into what it has become today. The most enduring trend has been increasing wine quality. A second trend has been for wineries and the industry to operate on increasingly sound business principles. A third important trend has been an increase in the ability of wineries to work together. These trends are likely to continue in the future and contribute to the growth of the industry.
