Interracial Living in the White Imagination
This chapter presents an event in which West Mount Airy residents invited UN delegates and employees to stay in their homes and live with their families, while being covered by local and national media outlets. The event was part of the organization's first widespread publicity campaign to “sell” the Mount Airy integration project. It presented the neighborhood as a model postwar American community and a pioneer of a new urban ideal: an economically stable, liberally minded, racially integrated space. This innovative marketing came to play a vital role in the West Mount Airy Neighbors Association's (WMAN) long-term goals of preserving the neighborhood as a vibrant, open community through the remainder of the twentieth century.
