The Warming Planet

The Warming Planet

(p.163) Chapter 13 The Warming Planet

Frank H. T. Rhodes

Cornell University Press

This chapter explores historical climate records and traces the patterns that they show. It contends that many of these records reflect natural variations in our climate. Historical global records based on direct measurements go back only about 150 years, but there are somewhat longer local historical records, including temperature estimates based on records of harvest yields, crop prices, and other indirect indications of climate, which go back further. The earlier ones occurred long before humans appeared on the scene; some of the later occurred while human numbers were so small and human influence so limited as to make it unlikely that the changes reflect the effects of human intervention. This does not imply that present human influence is unimportant, but it can be understood only as an added influence, imposed on the underlying pattern of natural climate change that is part and parcel of our planet.
