(p.11) Chapter 1 The Preacher
The Talents of Jacopo da Varagine

Steven A. Epstein

Cornell University Press

This chapter studies Jacopo de Varagine's Lenten sermons for two reasons. Firstly, it is the only collection to benefit from a modern edition, being a revealing body of sermons on a broad theme involving many subsidiary issues. Secondly, Professor Giovanni Paolo Maggioni has previously indexed the massive number of Bible citations included in the sermons, as well as other sources. The most revealing feature of Jacopo's sermons is what they inform about his understanding of the Bible. It is difficult to determine the exact number of model sermons Jacopo composed. An estimate by Ferrucio Bertini claims these numbers: Sermones de Sanctis (SS) 305, Sermones Dominicales (SD) 109, Sermones Quadrigesimales (SQ) 99, and Sermones Mariales (SM) 161. SQ is the touchstone for the study of the sermons, with the other collections situated where necessary to clarify what the main text may omit.
