Juxtaposing Urban Forestry and Agriculture in the PlaNYC Era

Juxtaposing Urban Forestry and Agriculture in the PlaNYC Era

(p.1) Introduction Juxtaposing Urban Forestry and Agriculture in the PlaNYC Era
City of Forests, City of Farms

Lindsay K. Campbell

Cornell University Press

The introduction begins with the question of why urban forestry was central to Bloomberg’s sustainability plan but urban agriculture was absent. It places PlaNYC in the context of the rise of municipal sustainability planning and it argues that understanding how and why the sustainability agenda is set provides crucial lessons to scholars, policymakers, and activists alike as they engage in the greening of cities. Developing this understanding requires attention to politics, discourse, and materiality as fundamentally intertwined domains. As such, the introduction identifies the key research questions and theoretical perspectives across these three domains that guide this book and lays out a brief summary of the chapters.
