This chapter addresses Alexander Kluge's reflections on the radical potential of auteur cinema at precisely that moment at the dawn of commercial television when cinema's livelihood was in the balance. Where in the world are there moments in time, if not in film? When everything in the world apart from one's childhood is too short, the cinema reproduces protracted time again, which itself makes moments possible in the first place. If classical cinema perishes, then the disagreements among three time-honored figures will be the first to disappear: that of the soldier of fortune, that of the voyeur, and that of the one who waits. Without the poison of their hostile interests, however, no amount of movement can establish cinema on the basis of their respective attitudes. Kluge then considers new media and their pollution threatening the internal worlds of human brains and feelings.
